Adam Oldfield, President – Guest Speaks at Mohawk College Radio Broadcasting class

I remember when I was going to college.   Not really, but I do recall I did go to college.  I’m a graduate of the Radio Broadcasting course of 1996.  Only a few years ago.  It’s always a pleasure to be asked to be a guest speaker to talk about how the radio broadcasting course set my life in a way that I never could think was possible.

Let me start with some interesting facts.

1. Mohawk was not my first choice.  I wanted to go to Wilfred Laurier, but was to late in submitting my application and further didn’t have all the needed courses to get in.  Mohawk accepted me for Radio Broadcasting.   It was also the only course that didn’t have exams and I figured this was going to be fun.

2. Radio was the last of my total choices of what I was going to want to learn.   First was Business Courses, followed by Computer Sciences, the main reason I again didn’t take these as I figured that I would go to University after a year at Mohawk so why bother.  Have fun doing nothing

3. I was noted in Mohawk with a nickname “Citrus Boy”, along with my fellow college associate Will MacKay (now the General Manager in Nova Scotia).  Together we didn’t get much more than C+.

4. I was threatened to be kicked out for throwing a reel-to-reel at a class mates head during one of our projects.   I want to say that I was sorry, but I’m still glad I did it to this day.  Doesn’t say much about me.

5. Mohawk did set my foundation for who I am today and what I can do.  I never would be where I am and have the network I do if it wasn’t for Mohawk teaching me the foundation of getting into the industry.

I’ll be talking to the class and going through my life story.   One that I’m sure will make a great book.  However, I’m still in the middle of living my life and further writing my book (Not really writing a book) but I’m honoured that Mohawk College still invites a graduate like myself to return and share my “holy cow, I did what in my life” story with the future of radio employees.
