Gadgets: The Inpulse Smartwatch for Blackberry

Tracing back as far as May, 2009, tech junkies have been teased with news about the imminent(well, Fall) release of a Bluetooth Blackberry Watch.  Upon my first hearing of the device, I assumed that this gadget was being developed by RIM itself, which made me pause to question why I had only heard of it so recently.  However, the device is not being developed by the Smartphone giant, but by a third party company by the name of Allerta  http://www.allerta.ca/ based in Waterloo, Ontario, home of the Blackberry itself.

The device, branded as a “Smartwatch”, is now available for pre-order online at http://www.getinpulse.com/buy.php is set to ship February, 2010, at a price of $149 US.

Like many other devices, a majority of the tech savvy and, um, not so tech savvy, people out there may find themselves asking why the World needs such a toy?  Well, like many others before it, this gizmo needs a bit of breaking down first.

These days, business and social culture are taking up larger and larger portions of our time.  Keeping up with new technology is hard enough, and, as the Internet continues to grow, so will the masses of people that are connected to it.  Staying up to date with work, friends, and family, is becoming a chore in and of itself.  Further, new laws and legislation are finally cracking down on the use of mobile devices while behind the wheel, and fines have been given to people that jaywalk or obstruct traffic while texting or reading emails while walking on busy streets.

Having a watch that would connect to your Blackberry via Bluetooth and pull down incoming data inconspicuously would be worth it’s weight in gold for situations like: during a meeting, while in class, and, to an extent, even while driving.  Aside the above, I can think of other times, like lying on a couch for a nap without having to worry about crushing your phone or just generally being annoyed by having something in your pocket!

The Inpulse Watch plays on the idea of impulse, taking advantage of not being able to get away from the constant connection, but in a good way.  People are reassured in this state.  Even though you may be on vacation, you can still relax and check in a few times without being snared by emails you don’t really need to respond to right away, but it doesn’t hurt to stay in the loop.
